Question asked by Alice:
I’m trying to create a design for an A4 poster in Photoshop. However, I’m not sure what the width and height of an A4 piece of paper are. Can someone help me please?
A4 Paper Width And Height
posted by Alastair:
The A4 paper size is commonly used for printing documents such as letters, magazines, forms and, of course, posters.
The dimensions of A4 paper are as follows:
- In millimeters: 210mm x 297mm
- In centimeters: 21cm x 29.7cm
- In inches: 8.27in x 11.69in
These dimensions follow the ISO 216 standard for A series paper sizes. Note that they differ to the US Letter paper width and height. Should you need to convert between centimeters and inches, give the cm to inches converter a try.
A4 Paper Dimensions In Pixels
Note that if you’re creating a Photoshop image file, the pixel dimensions will vary based upon the dots per inch (DPI) of the image. 72 DPI is standard for the web, but 300 DPI is a common standard for print.
- A4 at 72dpi: 595 pixels x 842 pixels
- A4 at 300dpi: 2480 pixels x 3508 pixels
- A4 at 600dpi: 4960 pixels x 7016 pixels
Other paper sizes
The A series system of paper was first adopted in Germany in 1922. The sizes were calculated in such a way that each size is made by dividing the size immediately above into two equal parts. The sizes are all the same geometrically as they are made using the same diagonal. The basic size A0 is one square metre in area.
